Carlo Janka

Swiss ski phenomenon Carlo Janka won the Giant Slalom ski competition at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Friday to claim the overall World Cup championship for the 2009-10 season.

The 23-year-old native of Graubünden won the GS, which comes on the heels of victories in the downhill competition at Garmisch and in the same discipline at Whistler during last month’s Winter Olympics.

Janka outdistanced his closest rival Benjamin Reisch, of Austria, who finished eighth in Friday’s GS competition.

Even if Reisch wins the slalom race scheduled for Garmisch on Saturday - the last men’s race for the season - he cannot gain enough points to catch up to the Swiss champion.
