What’s on: Pucks and monks, circuses and crèches
A look at what’s going on over the holidays, including Christmas and New Year’s events around the nation. In the cities of Zurich and Geneva, it’s circus season. Meanwhile, Davos hosts the Spengler ice hockey championship as Basel serves up a women’s volleyball tournament. For music lovers, a choir of monks makes the rounds in a handful of churches. Plus there’s the New Year Music Festival in Gstaad and in central Switzerland, a balloon fiesta promises to brighten the winter skies.
Salto Natale Circus, Zurich, through January 3, 2010
This circus is the brainchild of the folks behind Circus Knie – minus the animal acts. Instead it features a host of talented acrobats, dancers and musicians. With its location at Zurich Airport, it could save the day for stranded travellers.
Conelli Christmas Circus, Zurich, through January 3, 2010
“Generations – we’re all in this together” is the theme of this year’s Conelli Christmas Circus. In keeping with that theme, the age range of the performers is broad; some of them are kids, while others have grandkids already.
Live Nativity, Crans-Montana, December 24-25
Real people and animals populate this lively depiction of the original Christmas story. With this winter’s sub-freezing temperatures, some long underwear is probably a must under the swaddling clothes and kingly robes.
The Ammler Crèche, Amden, December 24, 2009 – January 31, 2010
In the heart of the “Heidiland” holiday region in eastern Switzerland, this Nativity scene is considered one of the nation’s most beautiful. Countless volunteers help set it up, and hundreds of visitors come to admire it.
Cirque Eloize, Geneva, December 26, 2009 – January 10, 2010
Théâtre du Léman hosts Canada’s Cirque Eloize and its production of “Rain.” Inspired by the director’s childhood memories of dancing in downpours, the show combines acrobatic feats with sensuality and pure poetry.
Arte Corale, various cities, December 26-29
Ten Russian Orthodox monks provide the voices behind Arte Corale. After a successful tour of Germany, their next stop is Switzerland – specifically Basel, Bern, Zurich and Gossau (Canton of St Gallen). You can view a sample video on their website.
Ice Hockey Tournament, Davos, December 26-31
For those involved in the Spengler Cup in Davos, there’s no such thing as a quiet and low-key end of the year. With six days of action, five international teams and a slew of extracurricular activities, there’s plenty of reason to be all fired up.
Women’s Volleyball, Basel, December 27-29
Teams from Brazil, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Switzerland face off at Basel’s St. Jakobshalle for this three-day volleball tournament. Now in its 21st year, this event is easy on the wallet: admission is free.
New Year Music Festival, Gstaad, December 29, 2009 – January 10, 2010
Gstaad, Rougement and Lauenen jointly host this festival, which features 16 concerts and 37 artists. This year’s event returns to the roots of music from the Baroque period to Chopin, Mozart and Haydn. Candlelight adds atmosphere.
”The Gondoliers,” Zurich, December 29, 2009 – January 10, 2010
The Pocket Opera Company brings this Gilbert and Sullivan classic back to life. Its international cast includes some big names from the UK, Canada, Germany and Switzerland. The lyrics are in English and the spoken word is in German.
New Year’s Parade, Appenzell, December 31, 2009 and January 13, 2010
The “Silvesterchlausen” is surely one of the nation’s most colourful New Year’s traditions. Held in the hills of Appenzell, it features men dressed in a variety of costumes ringing large bells. Supposedly, the January edition is the liveliest.
Balloon Fiesta, Sattel-Hochstuckli, January 3
More colour to brighten the winter landscape as 15 hot air balloons soar above this central Swiss ski resort. Take-off is scheduled for 11am, but spectators are invited to check out the pre-flight preparations. Storm date: January 17, 2010.
