What’s on: Art, antique and design fairs
A look at what’s going on over the next few days, including all sorts of antique, art and design fairs in Geneva, Lausanne, Solothurn and Zurich. It’s jazz week in Ascona and time to kick off Lucerne’s annual piano festival. Shadow puppets take on a whole new proportion in Zurich, while Bern hosts its famous traditional onion market. Last but not least, a whole lot of legs in a tango musical and equestrian extravaganza.
Antique fair, Lausanne, through November 2
Calling all antique lovers! Syndicat Romand des Antiquaires, a trade union of the region’s antique dealers, is hosting its 40th annual fair. Visitors can expect some fantastic gems – both real and metaphorical – at the Palais de Beaulieu.
Classic jazz workshop, Ascona, through November 22
Held at Hotel Ascona, this workshop focuses on traditional jazz and is open to musicians at all skill levels. An international team of teachers is on hand to help participants improve their skills in improvisation, style and technique.
”Tanguera”, Zurich, through November 29
Choreographed by tango star Mora Godoy, this musical from Argentina showcases tango at its best. With a cast of 30 dancers, the musical revolves around a love story that takes place in Buenos Aires.
”Shadow Land”, Zurich, through December 5
“Shadow Land” is the creation of a New York dance troupe called PILOBOLUS. The dancers use their bodies to create a fantasy world of figures formed by shadows. It’s definitely far more advanced than the standard shadow puppets.
”Creativa” art fair, Lausanne, November 19-22
With more than 100 exhibitors, this international fair has something to represent virtually every form of arts and crafts. It’s a great opportunity to admire fine handiwork, learn new techniques and stock up on supplies.
Art fair, Geneva, November 19-28
Who needs a traditional venue like a gallery or a conference centre? This gritty art fair takes place in Geneva’s Villereuse parking garage and features the creations of 24 international artists. Let’s hope the lighting works out OK!
Advent market, Fiesch, November 20-22
This little town at the edge of canton Valais is getting a jump start on the Christmas season with more than 60 market stalls. Art exhibitions, live music, pony rides and other entertainment add to the festive atmosphere.
Art “supermarket”, Solothurn, November 20, 2009 – January 9, 2010
Now in its 10th year, Solothurn’s art “supermarket” is a hit with both artists and shoppers. The concept is simple: some 70 artists each offer 40 original pieces for sale. Prices range from 99 to 599 Swiss francs, making art more affordable.
BLICKFANG design fair, Zurich, November 20-22
This fair presents an overview of furniture, fashion and jewellery design outside the realms of mass production. With 200 exhibitors, there’s truly something to spruce up any home or wardrobe. Daily fashion shows are a particular highlight.
Horse show, “Apassionata”, Zurich, November 21-22
For two days only, equine lovers can feast their eyes on this unusual show starring four-legged beauties. In addition to horses, the programme features ponies and donkeys trained to perform all sorts of tricks.
Onion Market, Bern, November 23
Called the "Zibelemärit" in Swiss-German, this festival takes place on the fourth Monday of every November. Local farmers peddle more than 50 tons of onions woven into artistic plaits. Mulled wine and onion soup keep the shoppers warm.
Piano festival, Lucerne, November 23-29
Three generations of master pianists celebrate the fine art of pianism at this year's Lucerne Festival at the Piano. Venues include the incomparable KKL as well as ten of the city’s most attractive hotel and restaurant lounges.
